Surrendering our hearts to Christ is the first step in our Christian walk. However, much more than being a one-time event, we are to surrender to Christ daily. This is what it means to “take up our cross and follow Him”, to “die to self”, and to “abide in Christ”. We will never be successful in surrendering the Big Things to Christ (addictions, idols, etc), if we don’t regularly practice surrendering the little things.
Is there something little you could surrender to Christ today? What about spending time reading the Bible instead of watching TV? What about choosing to play praise and worship music in the car instead of the local station? What about biting your tongue instead of reacting with a sarcastic comment to your spouse? What about deliberately spending 5-10 minutes in prayer?
The goal of the Christian life can be summed up by Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (ESV) Such a life of surrender is pleasing to God, results in the greatest human fulfillment, and will reap ultimate rewards in heaven (Luke 6:22-23).
It all starts with the little things.
